Operating Systems 101

Back in the 1980s every home computer had its own operating system. Going from a Commodore 64 to a BBC Micro was stepping into a very different world. The keys and graphics were all different and programs had to be written from scratch for each machine. There had been general computer operating systems before, like CP/M, but it was the arrival of Microsoft – first with MSDOS and then Windows – which established a standard. It meant that every program had the same type of menus and a program written for a Dell would run on a Toshiba without you even thinking about it.
