Orange HD voice to come to UK in 2010

Orange will become the first UK mobile phone operator to launch the High Definition Voice service in 2010, a new standard for the mobile phone industry that provides vastly superior voice quality.
The Mobile HD Voice coded, also known as Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate (WB-AMR) provides better audio quality thanks to a larger speech bandwidth that ranges from 50-7000Hz, compared to the current codecs that range from 300-3400Hz.
The new codec delivers the extra sound quality without using more network resources.
To benefit from the new audio quality, users will need a handset that supports the codec - and many handsets to be released or announced in 2010 should be suitably equipped.
Further details of the roll-out, which will begin with trials in the early part of 2010 to go nationwide later in the year, plus information of other networks that will announce support for the codec will be released later in 2010.
